Hiring a podcast marketing agency versus doing it yourself

If you're spending Sunday afternoons clipping audio for Instagram and wondering whether it's working, this is for you.

What an agency is actually for

A good podcast marketing agency does the recurring, skilled work that doesn't get done otherwise: turning episodes into search content, booking guest spots, producing clips that are worth watching, and reporting on what happened. It should not be a person who posts your artwork with a caption.

When DIY is the right answer

You have more time than money. Your show is new and you're still figuring out what it's about. You enjoy the promotion side. In any of those cases, do it yourself for the first three to six months, and use the free tools: a free listing on networks like PodAnswer, your host's clip tools, and cold pitches to other shows.

When to hire

You're publishing consistently, you know what your show is for, and the promotion work is the thing that keeps not happening. Or the show is a business asset (it brings clients, sells a product, supports a practice) and the hour you'd spend promoting is worth more elsewhere.

What it should cost

For an independent educational show, a focused service that gets your episodes ranking on Google and reports the results runs between one and four hundred dollars a month. Full-service agencies that also produce, edit and book guests run into the thousands. If a quote is far below the first range, ask what's actually being delivered. If it's far above, ask what you're getting beyond search and clips.

Keep control either way

Whoever does the work, make sure of three things. You own the content created from your show. You can see the numbers directly, not just a monthly summary. And the work keeps paying after you stop paying: articles that rank do, boosted posts don't.

How we work

PodAnswer is the search piece, built by an ad agency that produces podcasts for its own clients. Every show gets a hub, transcripts, a set number of ranked articles per month, and a dashboard. Production and full-service work comes through Main Street Creative. Plans are here.
